The South End neighborhood of Charlotte has long had a history of firsts but it was the arrival of the city’s first train from South Carolina that really changed everything. Charlotte was experiencing a gold mining and industrial boom in the mid-1800s and that boom brought with it innovative minds, big thinkers, and big dreamers. So in 1852 when the first rail car rolled in from Columbia, SC, it was met with a big brass band and free barbecue for the community.

This particular rail line, The Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad, was unique because not only was it funded by local government but also by local businesses and entrepreneurs who raised funds through grass roots efforts, as well as farmers and townsfolk who lived along the rail line. It was an entire community effort where everyone came together to bring about something innovative… and that spirit hasn’t really left.

South End saw a resurgence and a revitalization project was kicked off in the 90’s. Over the last 20 years, South End has gone from abandoned mills to a neighborhood that is truly vibrant and highly desirable. Retro meets contemporary where those same factories and warehouses were transformed into ultra-hip eateries, farmer’s markets, art galleries of all sorts, chic apartments, and trendy boutiques. All this sits along the LYNX lightrail blue line, giving riders full access to ALL parts of the city.

South End is a walkable and fit community with afternoons and weekend filled with people walking dogs, jogging, cycling, or attending a pop-up yoga session at a craft brewery. This trend of blending exercise with beer practically began in South End, so there are lots of options if that’s your cup of brew.
