Give Your Home Some Southern Flair

In All About Houses, House Design

Southern Living recently partnered with Perla to formulate a list on how to Southern-ize your home. The South is known for hospitality and comfort, so why wouldn’t you want to make your home embody those two things? Whether you’re making your home more marketable to list it for sale or decorating your brand new forever home, pull from this list for inspiration!

  1. Mix Old and New! The South is all about tradition and doin’ things the way Mama did. Part of that means cherishing family heirlooms and using Grandma’s sideboard as an entryway table or setting Great Aunt Betty’s stunning lamp alongside a modern armchair.
  2. Bring the Outside IN! If the humidity is too much to enjoy your sweet tea on the porch, bring outdoor elements inside to create your oasis. Decorate a sunporch or breakfast nook with wicker, bamboo, or exposed wood.
  3. Be Bold! Southerners may be polite but they aren’t shrinking violets. We’re vibrant, feisty, and colorful and our homes should reflect that. Southern Living recommends experimenting with mixing and matching patterns and colors. Rugs, pillows, curtains, throws, artwork… there are so many different and very easy ways to make a room bold.
  4. Try Formal. In some cases, formality means opulence. No proper Southern bed goes  without a dust ruffle and everyone knows your dining room curtains should be floor-to-ceiling velvet brocade with tassels and coordinating cornices.
  5. More is More! Try displaying your vast collection of rooster figurines, monogram your hand towels or table linens, and definitely decorate with fresh cut flowers. Southern flowers like magnolia, hydrangea, and gardenia are fragrant, gorgeous, and truly Southern.
