Online reservation giant OpenTable recently reported on the top 50 Southern restaurants in the whole country as voted on by diners and, wouldn’t you know it, two of those top restaurants are located right here in Charlotte. Known for deep flavors, rich desserts, and thick sauces with layers of flavor, Southern cooking just evokes that down home feeling of being at Momma’s table. Why else is the genre known as the most perfect comfort food? It’s like being hugged.
Dogwood Southern Table & Bar in Southpark took one of the spots. Opened in 2014 by Jon and Kim Dressler, the restaurant is located in Sharon Square. They are known for being upscale-comfortable, which may seem contradictory, but it really just means you can wear jeans and still order delicacies like duck confit.
Next up is The King’s Kitchen in 3rd Ward. This restaurant operates a little differently: as a non-profit. Proceeds go to help feed the local homeless population. Still, you can expect a high-end trendy restaurant with chef-inspired dishes using locally sourced ingredients. Find your Southern standards like fried green tomatoes, catfish, and grilled meatloaf.
Several other Carolinas-based restaurants made the list with picks in Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Wilmington, and several in Charleston, South Carolina. But with such outstanding, nationally-revered restaurants right here in the Queen City, there’s no reason to leave! Remember to use OpenTable to read restaurant reviews and make reservations online!
